I took over a facility that had been seriously neglected and was not meeting the needs of the staff, and implemented a comprehensive upgrade program to bring all facets of the facility up to current practice and technology. I replaced a 56K leased-line Internet connection with a high-speed DSL line, and upgraded the existing Livingston router with a powerful, expandable Linux-based solution at half the cost of a less capable solution from Cisco. I have built a new network server to handle SMB and NFS file/print services and DNS, LDAP, SMTP/POP/IMAP, NIS, and more for 12 domains, and pulled all DNS functions in-house for better control. I upgraded a seriously deficient physical infrastructure to Category 5 twisted pair and reorganized the main cabling distribution facility to current standards. I implemented a program for stricter control and documentation of software purchases to meet license requirements. I revised the NT domain structure for better fault- tolerance and a simpler, more robust network. I have implemented Windows NT 4.0 as the new standard OS for desktop PC's, and upgraded inadequate hardware to new Pentium II machines along the way. I handled almost all aspects of purchasing and acquisition of new equipment, and made sure that what was re-usable in the existing facility got put to use in the best possible way. 05/97 - 06/98: Network Manager Metron, Inc. Simulation Sciences Division, Solana Beach, CA Responsibilities included upgrading of about 10 Macintosh, 4 Windows 95 and 10 HP-UX 9.x systems with little connectivity to a powerful, integrated network encompassing 14 Windows 95, 15 Windows NT, 5 Macintosh, 12 HP-UX 10.x, 1 Solaris, 1 SGI, and 4 Linux systems, including data conversion and end-user retraining. I converted a proprietary AppleShare/QuickMail server to an open-standards based Linux server performing file sharing via NFS, SMB and AFP for universal access by Unix, Windows, and Mac systems, SMTP/POP/IMAP e- mail, and NIS and LDAP directory services. I built and demonstrated Linux-based development platforms that reduced program compilation times to several minutes from several hours on HP workstations costing two to three times as much. I built and implemented a Linux- based WWW server handling 4 domains. I set up remote users for telecommuting and teleconferencing via a PPTP-based Virtual Private Network over the Internet, substantially reducing access costs. I enabled secure connectivity with our government sponsor on the classified SIPRNET network, including the use of cryptographic equipment (the first non-military or non-governmental organization with such a connection). I brought all DNS functions in house from our ISP. I reoriented all network cabling for efficient use of switched and fast Ethernet technology, and then converted the single shared Ethernet network segment to use a high-speed Cisco Ethernet switch. I handled all training, troubleshooting, purchasing, repairs, etc. 06/90 - 05/97: Network Manager Metron, Inc., Scientific Consultants, Reston, VA Responsibilities included management of all information technology resources for a growing high-tech company. While employed by Metron, Inc., the company grew from about 20 to about 80 employees at this location, and went from about 30 computers (Macs, PCs, Apollo workstations, and a Sun) to over 300 machines encompassing PC, Mac, Sun, HP, SGI and other platforms. Operating systems in use included DOS/Windows 3.x, MacOS, Windows 95, Windows NT 3.x and 4.0, NetWare 3.x and 4.x, Solaris 1.x and 2.x, HP-UX 9.x and 10.x, Linux, and SGI IRIX 5.x. I implemented a NetWare-based network infrastructure on HP NetServers over switched and fast Ethernet, utilizing NDS for single- login network access and management on the PC and Mac desktops and NIS/NIS+ on the Unix systems. During this period, as the Internet grew in importance to us, and to our customers, I implemented TCP/IP connectivity and standards-based access to a variety of internal and external resources, including an intranet for browser-based access to corporate databases and information. I hired and supervised a technical staff of 3 people, tasking them with day-to-day and long- term projects. I aggressively utilized new technologies like Linux and distributed and symmetric processing to enhance our capabilities for large-scale numeric computation. I set up a network monitoring system that would notify me and my staff of problems and outages via e-mail and paging, allowing us to respond quickly 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to network and workstation problems as they occurred. I set up and managed a printing infrastructure that allowed users on any platform to use a variety of laser, color inkjet, color laser and other output devices.
