As a computer consultant, I focus on providing timely, cost-effective solutions to my
clients. I generally work with individuals and small companies who need high-quality
IT talent but can't afford or simply don't require it full time. I have been working
lately with companies that are building infrastructure for the long haul and want to
start with solutions that match their current needs, but are also scalable and that
will continue to serve them as their needs and companies grow. I rarely spend more than
a few days to a week per month with any one client, and I am generally working with
three to five clients at any given time. I'm also on call to handle emergencies and
solve immediate problems, and I usually configure my client's machines for remote
management via the Internet so I can frequently solve those problems immediately and
without the need to travel to the client site.
I like this kind of work because it allows me to draw on my wide range of
experience in putting together focused solutions that are well-matched to a
specific client. I'm comfortable with Windows, Mac OS, Linux, and more, so I can
choose the right systems and applications for a client's particular needs and
goals. My experience lets me look down the road and see the pitfalls that a
choice that seems adequate at the moment may create for a growing company. I also
pride myself on being able to communicate technical issues clearly and simply to
decision-makers, allowing them to understand the ramifications of the choices they
are making.
I can handle Windows servers and clients, Mac OS X and Classic, Linux, and more. I set
up networks and Internet connections, servers, and all sorts of data plumbing. I have
two broad areas of interest - digital media and mobile data - but I do a little bit of
everything. Servers and networking, mail and antispam, backup, antivirus/antispyware,
to home wireless, digital media servers and DVRs, if it's got bits in it, I make it
go.
I call myself a Digital Generalist, and I think I may be the last of a dying breed.
I understand how nerds put stuff together; I get technology at a preconscious
level, but I'm comfortable with non-technical people and can help them to acheive
their goals with a sense of humor and real understanding.
